Being a major global broadcaster, you would expect the BBC Sport Editor’s blog to be of a high standard. But DozenSports.com, the ultimate online sports index, researched and ranked the world of sports blogs, placing the BBC Sport blog in its Flops. Yet, in the same category, CNN’s World Sports Blog moved up three Dozen points this month to become one of Dozensports.com’s Tops.

So, how did this happen? Well, the Dozensports.com team trawl the internet on a mission to separate the champs from the chumps in the online sports world. Dozensports.com graded a wide range of sports blogs by evaluating the rate of posts, content, multimedia and social options. The BBC blog fell down on almost all parameters and over the past year it has gone days and weeks without a single new post! At the same time, CNN’s World Sports Blog has posted quality opinion and left-field analysis from correspondents and journalists on a variety of sports on a daily basis. The results mean that the CNN blog was graded at 7.8, while the BBC blog received just 3.6 out of 10.

“Ranking the BBC Sport Editor’s blog as one of our Flops this month shows that we at Dozen are not afraid to say what we think. At Dozen Media, our goal is to separate the good from the bad and the downright ugly in the online industries. Unfortunately, the BBC blog fell far short of what sports fans would expect from a big sports blog and they could learn a lot by looking at fellow broadcaster CNN’s World Sport Blog.”
– Daniel Raz, Editor at DozenSports.com

In other news this month, online sports shop Nike.Store.com held onto the top spot in the Shops category, largely thanks to its spectacular global event, the Human Race, at the end October. However, rival sports stores online like Adidas are not far behind. In the sports betting category, Sportsbook.com climbed to the top narrowly beating other sports betting sites such as TheGreek.com and innovative Sportsinteraction.com. Competition is hot, so watch this space next month for more updates from the world of online sports.

San Diego MMA Fighter and Jiu Jitsu Fighter Rani Yahya is leading the MMA World in Submission Percentages. Training for his upcoming fights at The Arena, the premier MMA gym in San Diego, he is also teaching a new style of Jiu Jitsu that could take the MMA world by storm.

San Diego, CA, October 06, 2009 — Rani Yahya is MMA’s King of the Submission Jungle. Although the man with the memorable name might still be unknown to some MMA fans out there, the reputation of San Diego MMA fighter and Jiu Jitsu ace Rani Yahya is rapidly growing. Currently training and teaching at The Arena, the Premier MMA gym in San Diego, Yahya is a 135 pound fighter in the WEC, the MMA organization owned by the parent company of the UFC. Yahya has the highest submission percentage of any ranked fighter in the MMA world. With a record of 15-4, an amazing 14 of his wins have been by submission.

This incredible 93% submission rate is due to Yahya’s Jiu Jitsu skills, which have also landed him 3 Jiu Jitsu World titles as well as the 2007 ADCC lightweight championship (the ADCC is the most prestigious submission grappling tournament in the world). Since signing with the WEC in 2007, Yahya has submitted 4 out of his 5 opponents in the first round. His last 3 fights have each earned him Submission of the Night awards, a record not matched by any other fighter in MMA.

So how did Yahya get so good? And why does his Jiu Jitsu work so well for MMA when other, more famous Brazilian Jiu Jitsu champions haven’t come close to matching Yahya’s submission rate in MMA? To answer these questions, it’s necessary to find the source of Yahya’s Jiu Jitsu. In finding that source, a story is uncovered that could have been written for Hollywood, instead of drawn from real life.

Born in 1984 in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, Yahya started training in Judo by the age of 4. A natural athlete, Yahya was on his way to becoming a Judo champion when fate intervened in the form of a near fatal snake bite at the age of 11. Rushed to the hospital, Yahya was close to death until a man known simply as Ataide came to save him, bringing the anti-venom Yahya needed to stop the poisoning. Fortunately for Yahya, Ataide is the Head of the Reptile Dept. of the Brasilia Zoo. A man known by some as the “Crocodile Dundee” of Brazil, Ataide is one of the foremost experts in the world on deadly reptiles. But Ataide is an expert in another area as well, Jiu Jitsu.

Like Yahya, Ataide trained in martial arts since he was 4, learning from one of the 5 original Red Belts (Jiu Jitsu’s highest rank) of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Because of his intense study of snakes, Ataide eventually transformed the style of Jiu Jitsu he was taught into his own special system, which features snake-like chokes and strangles. Thus was born Ataide’s Constrictor Jiu Jitsu.

Constrictor Jiu Jitsu’s practitioners suffocate their prey just like the snakes that Ataide still handles daily. This style is particularly effective for MMA because it doesn’t rely on fighting from the back like many Jiu Jitsu fighters do. Because of this, Constrictor Jiu Jitsu fighters are not as susceptible to ground and pound and can quickly neutralize opponents who make the mistake of going to the ground with a Constrictor fighter. Besides Yahya and many others in Brazil, UFC fighter Paulo Thiago (who defeated Josh Koscheck in Thiago’s 2009 UFC debut) is also a student of Ataide.

When Ataide saved Rani Yahya’s life, he recognized something special in the young boy, and adopted him as his martial arts son, teaching him the secrets of Constrictor Jiu Jitsu. Because of this influence, Yahya developed a passion for snakes as his mentor Ataide did. Like a modern-day Spiderman, Yahya feels the snake that bit him also transformed him, giving him special powers along the way. Since that first bite 14 years ago, Yahya has never been sick. Incredibly, when another poisonous snake bit him several years later, it had almost no effect.

Today, Yahya has left the real jungle and concentrates on a different one in the MMA world. He lives, trains and teaches in San Diego, where he is the Head Instructor of No Gi Jiu Jitsu for The Arena in San Diego, the well-known San Diego MMA gym where fighters like UFC standout Diego Sanchez train.

Besides his skills as a fighter, Yahya also possesses a great ability for teaching, sharing the Constrictor techniques with students who are looking for a submission grappling system that works well for both MMA and Jiu Jitsu. At The Arena, Yahya is establishing the roots of the Constrictor system in San Diego and eventually the rest of the U.S., as more people learn about this incredibly effective Submission Grappling style.

Whatever happens for Yahya in the future, one thing is certain. Whoever he faces next in the WEC better bring their A game. Because if they don’t, Yahya will strike as fast as the snake that originally bit him, earning yet another victory for MMA’s King of the Submission Jungle.

Dartmouth, England, September 11, 2009 — Six officer Cadets have returned safely after undertaking a nerve jangling and highly demanding bid to summit Western Europe’s highest peak.

Standing over 15 000 feet in the French Alps, Mont Blanc is prone to highly changeable weather conditions which can deteriorate rapidly. It also presents considerable objective dangers such as constant rock fall and narrow ridges where the effects of strong winds can have a disastrous impact. As such Mt Blanc presents a formidable challenge for both seasoned and inexperienced climbers alike and it proved no easy objective for a recent Britannia Royal Naval College Expedition named, ‘Sea to the Summit’.

Expedition Leader, Lieutenant Commander Paul Hart, said, “Expeditions of this type provide our people with an exceptional opportunity to develop the leadership characteristics and personal qualities we need. Faced with clear and real objective risks, individuals can gain an insight into their true psyche under demanding and potentially hazardous conditions. This is perhaps the closest replication of the operational environment that can be achieved without actually being on Operations and it enables individuals to gain some conditioning to what they may face as a reality of their future military careers. The conception and preparation of this particular trip, combined with the completion of the objectives, required substantial and detailed planning by all participants. It was a great pleasure to work with such a motivated and committed party. I was truly impressed with the grit and determination of the Cadets to deal with what were, frankly, extremely hostile conditions on the mountain. The fact that 18 civilian mountaineers had to be rescued off the mountain while we were up there testifies to the severity of the conditions. It also testifies to the quality of the Cadets who remained focussed and calm while following instructions and employing all the training of preceding days to make an unassisted descent in the ferocious conditions.”

After 4 days of group training, involving glacier travel and crevasse rescue procedures, high altitude acclimatisation and advanced mountaineering techniques, the party spent 2 days in excess of 10 000 feet, ascending the spectacular Gouter Route. This required substantial height gains and long days of load carrying and working as a team.

Sub Lieutenant Rob Tristram, the senior cadet, added, “As a submarine volunteer, I know that I will face many obstacles and demands in my training and future employment. Being part of this expedition has allowed me to recognise and conquer many physical and mental challenges. The experience will make me more confident in my ability to face up to, and overcome, all that my future career may place in front of me.”

The Expedition was completed within 3 months of initial approval. This in itself was an impressive achievement, considering the majority of the Young Officers joined the Royal Navy only last Easter. Intense training and preparation both in the UK and on location in Chamonix, bonded the team and exposed the trainees to the concepts of Grit, Courage, Determination, Perseverance and Fortitude – skills and values that will benefit them as they progress their careers.

The young officers have now joined the Fleet for their ongoing initial officer training, better prepared for having participated in this Expedition.

Juice Bar Consultant Performance Food Centers Partners with Professional Wrestler King Kaluha to Promote his “Lean, Mean & Clean” Anabolic Steroid Risks and Awareness Program. Young Athletes to Benefit by Learning a Safe and Healthy Approach to Fitness and Nutrition.

Pottstown, PA, August 26, 2009 — Young athletes are continually bombarded with conflicting messages about proper training methods from places like the locker room, mainstream media and their “friends;” that’s why Performance Food Centers has teamed with professional wrestler Mike Alegado, also known as King Kaluha, to educate kids on the healthy and safe way to approach fitness and nutrition. The “Lean, Mean & Clean” Anabolic Steroid Risks and Awareness Program is targeted toward high school and junior high school athletes, but their parents, siblings and friends will benefit too.

Mike Alegado is no stranger to the dangers of steroid abuse and unhealthy training techniques from his experiences in collegiate sports, professional wrestling, weight training and youth athletics. Furthermore, as an athlete for over 25 years, Mike has seen the result of many ill-conceived training regimens that damaged the health of friends and left them regretting their lack of knowledge. Unfortunately, Performance Food Centers shares this experience; whether it’s the consumption of healthy fitness smoothies instead of a sugar-laden energy drink, ill-advised training methods, or even the use of anabolic steroids, kids often don’t have a consistent source of reliable information on healthy athletic training.

As a professional wrestler, Mike Alegado’s King Kaluha persona is in a unique position to speak to kids based on personal knowledge. After training diligently, Mike created “King Kaluha” when he entered the world of professional wresting in the early 1980s. Wrestling internationally and operating his own professional wrestling school, King Kaluha saw the best and worst athletic training methods. Accurate training advice was difficult to find; straight talk about the use of anabolic steroids was almost unheard of and convenient nutritional advice from a place like an on-site juice bar was non-existent. Although having never used anabolic steroids himself, Mike has seen an increase in their use over the past three decades and felt compelled to take a stand against these substances by creating a program to help young men and women stay on the right track.

Mike’s “Lean, Mean & Clean” Anabolic Steroid Risks and Awareness Program is targeted to high school and junior high school athletes and consists of a 90 minute seminar including a question and answer session. Subjects covered include: How Anabolic Steroids Work, The Side Effects of Anabolic Steroids, Risks of Anabolic Steroids and Healthy Alternatives to Anabolic Steroids. Mike’s goal is to deliver this seminar throughout the country.

Thankfully, Mike also includes a discussion on nutrition’s role in fitness training too. While there has been a great deal of publicity surrounding banned substances in professional sports recently, like baseball, there are also many all-natural and healthful supplements that can be used to speed the recover of athletes’ bodies after a strenuous workout, like Performance Foods’ supplement boosts. These supplements provide the body with important vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients necessary to maintaining long-term health.

About Performance Food Centers
As a juice bar business consultant and proponent of the fitness industry, Performance Food Centers was created with one goal in mind: to provide natural, whole foods to everyone, while simplifying the complex world of nutrition. Furthermore, Performance Food Centers is excited to join Mike Alegado to help kids achieve great results without the use of performance enhancing drugs or anabolic steroids. In working together, their hope is to spread the news about the risks of steroid use, provide healthy alternatives and show kids that they can achieve their goals by living a healthy and natural way.

Some promoters find it hard to discover fresh talents to promote and to give opportunities to. A site that provides them with connections to people who want to break into the world of boxing may just be the answer to this dilemma. One such site that gives both sides the opportunity to meet up and create the kind of working relationship that is lucrative to both is a fighting social networking site. A social networking site that focuses on getting fighters, promoters, and fans together works to unite all of these elements together to get all three to coordinate and keep each other updated.

This kind of a site gives aspiring fighters the chance to put up a profile and get noticed by these promoters who are looking for fighters to promote. This kind of a site also gives promoters the chance to discover fresh talents that may promise to grow into a career worthy of their attention. Signing up for an account on these social networking sites may not only be a way for promoters to find their fighters, these can also be used as a conduit for promoting boxing matches, meet and greet events, press conference, and the like. In other words, these social networking sites that are geared toward fighting fans and fighters alike will work to their benefit in more ways than one.

When a promoter signs up for an account, they can then browse through profiles of people who are into the certain fighting styles, like boxing or mixed martial arts, and they can promote and make events for these fighters. Some of these fighters who sign up do have videos of their moves and some of their fights for these promoters to see. There are also stats and other information that promoters can find on the profiles of these fighters. Once they find the ones that they like, they can then get in touch with these talents to get them to either consider signing up for an event or for a career in their chosen fighting field.

Once the stage is set, promoters can then start advertising the events that they have for their fighters on their own page. They can also ask people to view clips of the fighters training, clips of previous fights that certain fighters have, and the stats of these fighters through links on their own page. These social networking sites for fighters, promoters, and fans alike create the kind of opportunities for all those involved that cannot be had elsewhere. Boxing matches, autograph signing, wrestling matches, press conferences, and other events can be easily learned about from these sites and those who stand to gain from this are all of the people who are on these sites. The fans get to know where the next fight is, the promoters get to tell the fans where to go to see their favorite fighters, the fighters get to find work and a possible boost in their fighting career, and all because of a social networking site that links them all together.

Get discovered and start boxing professionally by signing up on a social networking site made for people who are into fighting .

San Diego MMA and Jiu Jitsu Champion Rani Yahya, representing San Diego MMA Gym The Arena, faces John Hosman in the WEC on the Miguel Torres versus Brian Bowles card.

San Diego, CA, July 31, 2009 — San Diego MMA and Jiu Jitsu fighter Rani Yahya will face John Hosman in the WEC on August 9th in Las Vegas Nevada at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. Yahya, the current lightweight ADCC submission grappling world champion, is also the Head No Gi Jiu Jitsu instructor for The Arena (http://www.TheArenaMMA.com), a highly regarded MMA gym in San Diego.

Yahya will be fighting on the undercard of the Miguel Torres versus Brian Bowles fight. Yahya is a bantamweight (135 lb) fighter with a 14-4 pro MMA record, including 4 previous fights in the WEC. He is considered one of the best pound for pound grapplers on the planet, with 3 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu World Championships, and is the reigning lightweight submission grappling world champion, winning the ADCC World Championships in 2007 at the age of 22. After his August 9th WEC fight, Yahya will be defending his ADCC title in September 2009 in Barcelona Spain.

His opponent is John Hosman, a 28 yr. old fighter with a 17-4-1 pro MMA record recorded over the past 4 years. Coincidentally, Hosman trains out of the same camp as Clay Guida, while Yahya trains out of the The Arena, the same camp as Diego Sanchez. Guida and Sanchez recently fought one of the most exciting MMA fights in recent years on the Ultimate Fighter finale on June 22nd, 2009.

Hosman was chosen to replace Kenji Osawa, who was sidelined by a foot injury. The 5′10” Hosman, known for his Wrestling, Boxing, and Muay Thai skills, is an interesting matchup for the 5’6” Jiu Jitsu wizard Yahya, who is known for his amazing submission abilities.

[JKHANOK] Before you can become a full fledged mariner or boat officer, you will need to take and pass the US Coast Guard license exams. The United States maritime industry has strict regulations especially for those aspiring to become a Captain. You can only command a boat, a charter cruise, or a commercial vessel if you have a Captain’s License from the Coast Guard. You also need to know updated regulations on shipping transport which are embodied in 49 CFR or Code of Federal Regulations. Fortunately, there are good materials available today that allow you to self-study for the license examinations.

First, you should get updated 49 CFR book which is available in most maritime bookstores. However, if you want to be sure that your 49 CFR copy contains the most updated rules and regulations of the Federal authorities you should check the shelves of Seabreeze Nautical Books and Charts. This bookstore is located in San Diego and has the most extensive collection of maritime books, charts, software, and tools. It is very important to have the latest copy of 49 CFR because you will get into legal trouble if you do not know the Federal regulations on maritime transport. Besides, knowledge of the Code of Federal Regulations for maritime transport will greatly help you during your license exams.

Aside from studying and understanding the different parts of CFR 49, you also have to prepare yourself for the actual Coast Guard Captain’s license exam. One of the best self study methods that you can do is to take several simulated exams. A simulated exam is very useful for examinees. You will not feel pressured during actual exams if you will take lots of simulated exams. This self confidence will greatly help you to pass the exam provided by the US Coast Guard to get your captains license. Just like in other endeavors, getting lots of practice will help you to master your craft. So if you practice the exams of the US Coast Guard often, then you will surely pass the test in one sitting alone.
