San Diego, CA, October 02, 2010 — Symbolic Collection announced today Singer has been named Botanical Artist in Residence during 2010 at the Huntington Botanical Garden in Pasadena and will be recognized during a reception on October 18. In addition to this honor, Dr. Singer has created a set of images exclusively for the Huntington known as the Huntington 100 or the H100. Prints from that series will be available exclusively by Symbolic Collection.

A truly eccentric artist, Singer has an eye for capturing nature with his Hasselblad digital camera to produce images that look like the product of old master painters of the 1600s. Singer is recipient of the Linnaeus silver medal and has been recognized for marrying art and science. He became the first photographer in history and fourth American to earn this award in its 104 year history. Singer is the recipient of a Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography, the photographer’s equivalent of the Nobel Prize.

Known for his exquisite large-scale prints in Botanica Magnifica, a five-volume set of books that feature single blooms of 250 of the world’s rarest plants created and presented only for the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.

“Just as the finest classical painter attempted to make his brush stroke invisible, I attempt to capture these botanical specimens with a clarity and humility becoming an instrument serving a higher force,” said Singer. “Many of the most unusual species seen in Botanica Magnifica seem to be alien life forms but really are true treasures of our home planet.”

Los Angeles, CA, October 06, 2010 — Fairies With Children (The Yes on hate Episode) opens October 22nd at the Meta Theatre on Melrose. The show is a drag musical spoof of the popular 90s sitcom. A group of gay activists move to the suburbs disguised as the famous American sitcom family to better understand conservatives. Unknowingly, they find a foreclosed upon home right next door to Senator Bavid Breier and his live-in … Assistant. The character of Senator Bavid Breier is loosely based on Congressmen David Dreier, once a Republican favorite until he was ousted from his closet by Mike Rogers on his BlogActive website and in the movie “Outraged”. According to writer John Trapper, “the character is actually a composite of several closeted hypocrites we’ve seen over the last several years.” Trapper says he spent a lot of time imagining how painful that it must be for both Dreier and his Chief of Staff living a life that is not only a lie, but spent working against their own freedoms (as Dreier has a long record of anti gay votes). “In the show, we look inside the mind of Brad Smith through our character Chad the Assistant, who doubles as Marcy Darcy for the purposes of keeping their close relationship a secret. In our story, Chad loves Bavid so much that he does anything for him, but really dreams of a complete fulfilling life out of the closet.”

Trapper surprisingly has a lot of positive things to say about Dreier, “he is a very charismatic Politician, nice to look at, and very intelligent. It is my greatest hope that he will soon walk the path of Ken Mehlman and come out where he can do some good for the whole community. I believe if he did come out, and did so in the right way, he’d still be elected and a great asset to our community … of course he’d have to start voting differently.”

Dreier isn’t the only one to get spoofed in this show. Theatre goers will get to see and hear about their favorite Fox News personalities during a musical tribute called “Good Morning Fox and Friends” sung by Donna Pieroni one of the original fat women from the TV series Married With Children. In this show, she plays an over zealous tea party member who “doesn’t need friends cause she has the whole gang at Fox News”. In the off chance Theatre goers may have forgotten some of the famous hypocritical and stupid conservative quotes from recent years, they’ll get some of those in this show too.

WideStance Productions was founded to bring gay content in a way that people can get a peek into a world they wouldn’t otherwise see. “We try to keep them too busy laughing to notice they’re being taught tolerance”. The troupe’s last production “The Golden Gays” was a hit in Los Angeles and even traveled to the home of the famous foursome South Beach Florida.

San Diego, CA, October 06, 2010 — The 24-hour Survivor Crop for the Cure is back to raise funds for breast cancer awareness and research through Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, San Diego. Attendees will be crafting and scrapbooking beginning at 9:00 a.m. on October 16 to 9:00 a.m. on October 17. Sponsored by North County-based Ever After Scrapbooks, this fun-filled event is held at Ever After Scrapbooks and The Creekview Plaza, located just behind the store. Scrapbooking will officially kickoff at noon!

This year, the Survivor Crop organizers have set a goal of raising $70,000 by adding additional fundraising opportunities, including a silent auction. Each attendee is required to make a minimum $125 donation to Komen San Diego, but the passionate participants are also given incentives to compete for Ultimate Survivor (highest fundraiser) individually and as a team. With the fun-raising meter rising by the hour, over $21,000 has been raised so far. This is the second year that participants have the capability to raise funds online, so anyone, anywhere, anytime can conveniently contribute to support a participant. Also, the event will feature the Ever After Scrapbooks’ Think Pink Silent Auction, which includes products donated by Sony and includes a variety of crafting materials.

This unique event, which brings together crafters of all types, but especially scrapbookers and paper crafters with a common interest in helping Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, San Diego in its mission to eradicate breast cancer forever, has raised more than $400,000 since its inception in 2001.

“Breast cancer affects women in their most productive years. Phoenix, AZ, October 06, 2010 — $499 million is available for Arizona businesses and homeowners who have initiated recycling, solar energy or other green initiatives but most of the money has not yet been claimed.

“I find it hard to believe that so much money is available for weatherizing and other energy projects but so few Arizona businesses have applied for the funds,” said Trent O’Brien, Vice President of APM, an Arizona HOA Management firm. “I know Arizona businesses and Phoenix HOA
organizations care about the environment. Now they have a cash-incentive to get involved so I hope they do before it’s too late.”

With just 18 months left in the program, which is managed by the US Department of Energy, less than $10 million has been awarded to Phoenix companies and communities for renewable energy projects, such as solar panel installation, electric cars or home weatherization. This has left most of the stimulus fund, $480 million, unclaimed.

While some of the funds are anticipated for release once current Arizona companies see their grant applications approved, industry experts fear most of the fund and the opportunity it represents to improve the environment will disappear in the fall of 2012.

“At APM, we’ve implemented a variety of programs, including water and electricity conservations, which help the environment and help our Home Owners Associations throughout Arizona,” said O’Brien. “We urge all Arizona companies and communities who are considering an energy-saving or recycling program to reach out to the EPA and apply for the cash before it’s gone.

O’Brien wants businesses to realize that the renewable energy fund will do more than help the environment and help residents reduce their energy bills. The fund will also provide struggling Arizona companies with a steady stream of business that keeps workers employed.

Arizona has about 271,400 fewer jobs than it did when the recession began in December 2007. It’s unlikely the stimulus will come close to replacing all those jobs, but business leaders like O’Brien believe it will help some families survive. “If more Arizona businesses with renewable energy programs apply for the grant, they’ll save jobs and help save the environment. We have just 18 months to use that money before it goes away forever.”

Scranton, PA, October 11, 2010 — At Metro-Magic’s yearly Gala VIP convention this week Dorothy Dietrich received the first standing ovation ever given an award winner in the history of the awards. The event filled the room with the one of the largest crowds of the day. The response was unanimous.

In giving her the award Bill Wisch, one of the organizers of the event along with Bob Solari, called her a world-class magician and mentioned some of her unique accomplishments such as escaping from a straitjacket while suspended hundreds of feet in the air from a burning rope on an HBO special, her record breaking bullet catch, her Houdini Museum, her being featured on CBS, NBC, ABC, BBC, CBC, Travel Channel, Biography Channel, TV Land, etc. Also mentioned were her highly successful Magic Towne House in New York City, the Houdini Seances, The Psychic Theater Show and Hocus Pocus Magazine.

Dorothy, in an emotional response expressed her gratitude to those magicians who helped her along the way, and continue to support her. Among those mentioned were Walter B. Gibson, Dick Brooks, Meir Yedid, Lou Lancaster, Tony Curtis, and all of the many of the performers at The Magic Towne House, and others.

She brought along a few television film clips which to show the attendees.

Two other upcoming events were announced that will also feature Dorothy Dietrich.

The Houdini Seance at Scranton’s Houdini Museum, which will also feature world renowned illusionist John Calvert. Scranton’s Mayor Doherty has proclaimed Sunday October 31, 2010 as John Calvert Day. There will also be a show, and lecture by John Calvert as well as a tribute to Tony Curtis the actor who played Houdini in the famous Paramount biopic about the legendary escape artist.

On Thursday November 11, 2010, Dorothy Dietrich will be on a panel with “Dean of American Magicians” George Schindler and Houdini biographer Kenneth Silverman to discuss why the legendary magician occupies such a prominent place in American popular culture. This has been a triple cool week for Les LaMotte, who received a highly coveted Hollywood Music In Media (HMMA) nomination for his previous single “In His Rest” just as his award winning songs “Sonrise A New Tomorrow” and his 2008 nomination for Hollywood Music Awards “The Great Physician” both received Honorable Mention by 2009 Billboard World Song Contest.
