GREENFIELD, MA – Copperhill Media announces its newest release, “The Ayurvedic Healer,” a novel by Indian author Joy J. Kaimaparamban.

Set in the intriguing atmosphere of India in the early 20th century, full of mysticism, love, compassion, and political drama, The Ayurvedic Healer tells the story of Madhavan Namboodiri, a physician practicing an ancient medical science, and his enduring love for Rosalie. By healing the underprivileged, regardless of their status, touching the untouchables, he follows his beliefs and disobeys the rules of his society. His life story is set in the background of India’s struggle for freedom, the communist revolt in the Southern State of Kerala, social advancement, and the emergence of new societies. The Ayurvedic Healer sweeps the reader into an exotic place and time, rendering an intimate experience through sharing Madhavan Namboodiri’s life and love.

Joy J. Kaimaparamban has written 18 novels in his native Malayalam language, four of them are children’s literature. His first novel in Malayalam received the Tagore award, named after Rabindranath Tagore, a famous poet, novelist, musician, playwright, and Nobel Prize winner.

Joy J. Kaimaparamban was born in October 1939 to a middle class family in the Southern state of Kerala in India. After finishing his education he became a schoolmaster and worked in several Kerala government schools teaching English. He retired in 1995. Currently he lives in Vayalar, a beautiful village in the Alappuzha (Alleppey) district with his wife and two children.

His first novel written in English, The Azure of Solicitude, was published in 2009. His second novel, The Ayurvedic Healer, was published by Copperhill Media in July of 2010.

Joy J. Kaimaparamban is not only a passionate storyteller. He envisions people and events, past or present, in his native India as material for unwritten works. These visions and the ability to transform them into fascinating stories is a trademark of his novels.

The Ayurvedic Healer is available though all major online stores, including Amazon.Com and Barnes & Noble, and through all good bookstores.

According to regional analysts at Capital Worldwide, China will boost spending on oil and mining acquisitions by at least half this year to take advantage of lower valuations after commodity prices slumped.

Recent evidence of Capital Worldwide’s latest assertion on China includes state-owned Yanzhou Coal Mining Co., who last week agreed to buy Australia’s Felix Resources Ltd. for about A$3.5 billion ($2.9 billion), a day after Sinochem Corp., China’s biggest chemicals trader, offered to buy Emerald Energy Plc for 532 million pounds ($881 million) to gain oil fields in Syria and Colombia.

China National Petroleum Corp.’s plan to buy Repsol YPF SA’s Argentine unit may push Chinese purchases of overseas commodity assets to $43 billion this year, a 48 percent increase on 2008, according to Capital Worldwide analysis findings.

A Capital Worldwide analyst statement last week took the view that a fundamental lack of core resources such as nickel, oil and copper has compelled China to go on a buying spree in preparation for a rainy day to come, and that low commodity prices have attracted them into the market for such assets now.

Bids for resources by China, whose $2.1 trillion in currency reserves are the world’s largest, have been met with opposition in the U.S. and Australia. Neither concern over its growing influence nor the arrest of four Rio executives in Shanghai have stopped Chinese companies from buying assets abroad as the nation’s 4 trillion yuan ($585 billion) economic stimulus spurs demand. Furthermore, they anticipate seeing a long-term trend of larger and bolder deals from China.

The Reuters/Jefferies CRB Index, which tracks 19 raw materials, dropped 36 percent last year, the biggest annual decline since at least 1957. The measure has gained 15 percent this year on signs that the recession may be ending.

According to data in the Capital Worldwide report, Chinese energy companies have spent at least $13 billion on overseas assets since December as they take advantage of lower valuations caused by the slowdown.

KUWAIT: Early detection of breast cancer is the key toward saving women’s lives, says breast cancer survivor Dorothy Robb, an expat who has been living in Kuwait for three and a half years. Dorothy was diagnosed with breast cancer, a fate shared by one in eight women globally, during a routine mammogram screening back in the United Kingdom in 2002.

“My lump was detected very early” she says, going on to say “because of that I am still seen as a survivor”. In 2007, Dorothy had a second lump discovered. She had to endure two lumpectomies in 2002 and in 2007 to remove the lumps followed by radiation treatment. Being diagnosed with cancer “is an incredibly scary experience,” she says. “Early detection means that the outcome is more likely to be good.

Prior to her diagnosis, Dorothy used to go for a routine medical screening once every three years. Since Dorothy’s lump was discovered she undergoes regular screenings once a year.

Breast cancer, the most common cause of cancer mortality, accounts for 16 percentage of cancer deaths in women. However, prevention and regular screening heralds positive changes. More than 1.2 million people worldwide will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, according to the World Health Organization. Also, mortality rates are declining in all women and this is believed to be the result of early detectioBrin and more effective treatments because some 70 percent of the cancers are preventable.

Dorothy retains a strong echo of the prevention worldview. Her appeal is for women to get a mammogram and early screening, something that is less common in Kuwait when compared to other parts of the world.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide accounting for just over one million new cases annually. Breast cancer, the most common cause of cancer mortality, accounts for 16 percentage of cancer deaths in women. However, screening by mammography can reduce mortality from breast cancer by up to one-third among women aged 50-69 years, WHO say on their website.

Dr Nouralhuda Karmani, founder of Breast Care Kuwait – an NGO that was established in 2008 maintains that timely screening has a profound effect on mortality rates. Some 85 percentage of women who discovered the breast cancer early and get treated by lumpectomy live long enough, she says.

Breaking the barriers
Prevention is not very popular in eastern cultures, argues Dr Karmani.
In Kuwait, the surge in breast cancer diagnoses at a later stage stems from a two-prong trend: the lack of knowledge about breast cancer and screening, concomitant with the lack of trust in dealing with different health authorities.

Breast cancer can affect anyone – regardless of who you are or where you’re from,” says. Dr. Karmani, who is also a head of the breast imaging unit at Al-Sabah Hospital in Kuwait. She says, “People fighting against breast cancer today are mothers, sisters, daughters and friends – they are people who need our support and acceptance as they battle to regain their health. And we honor their fight when we embrace and share the message that breast cancer screening is vital for all women.

In her opinion, the prevailing mindset is changing today for the better. She advises women at 40 and older to have regular screenings for breast cancer. In Kuwait, yearly some 300 women – both expats and Kuwaitis – are diagnosed with breast cancer at advanced stage, says Dr Karmani. That is why, according to her, prevention and raising awareness are pivotal.
Awareness: Key to survival

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month which aims to raise awareness about early detection. Pink ribbons and pins that are usually associated with breast cancer awareness are distributed at various places. Kuwait is no exception. Booths with doctors and consultants as well as survivors address the deficiency of information on prevention by distributing brochures or talking to women. Responding to the disease on time has saved lives.

P&G battle breast cancer
Many companies and NGOs, join together to battle this major health hazard in support of breast cancer awareness month. This year, for instance, in a campaign slogan-ed ‘Choose Wise & Save Lives’, Procter & Gamble (P&G) is partnering with regional breast cancer associations to encourage residents across the Gulf to join the fight for women’s survival against breast cancer. Their month-long awareness campaign aims to educate and empower women to take charge of their own breast health by spreading the message
that early detection is the best method for successfully treating breast cancer. It also aims to ensure that women, regardless of their location, will be able to access information and learn about breast cancer and the importance of its early detection.

In Kuwait, common misconceptions and myths about breast cancer discourage some women from scheduling crucial screenings. In partnership with Breast Care Kuwait, P&G is addressing these barriers by giving women in Kuwait an opportunity to show their solidarity with those struggling to overcome breast cancer through the “Choose Wise and Save Lives” campaign. In Dr Karmani’s words “the partnership with P&G is bolstering our efforts to demystify the disease.
Saving lives

‘Choose Wise and Save Lives’ aims to reach one million women across the GCC by being a visible presence in the places where they do their shopping, a press release said.

In the words of Wael Al-Jamil, P&G Arabian Peninsula, globally, the number of breast cancer cases is on the rise. “Despite this troubling increase, many women are still unaware that early detection gives them the best chance of survival. This year, we are focusing our efforts by linking this important message to popular products on a woman’s shopping list. By connecting with women in the places where they shop, we hope to help raise awareness about early screening in a simple, friendly way that emphasizes
how each consumer can personally contribute to helping a woman beat the early signs of breast cancer,” he said in a press release.

The brands involved are those with which women strongly identify, and include Pampers, Braun, Always, Olay and Pantene. “By actively utilizing the reach of these brands, P&G is able to deliver key breast health messages to thousands of women across the GCC every single day,” the press release said. Brochures about breast cancer will be displayed in many of the region’s supermarkets, including Carrefour, The Sultan Centre and City Centre stores in Kuwait.

On October 6, 7, 8 and 9, 2009, the Hanoi authorities have tried these pro-democracy activists including writer Nguyen Xuan Nghia, Mr. Ngo Quynh, Mr. Nguyen Manh Son, Mr. Nguyen Van Tinh, Mr. Nguyen Van Tuc, Mr. Nguyen Kim Nhan in Hai Phong and Mr. Pham Van Troi, teacher Vu Hung and poet Tran Duc Thach in Ha Noi, Vietnam. All were imprisoned with various sentences from 2 to 6 years in jail for the fabricated and arbitrary charges of the so-called “violation of Article 88 of Vietnam’s Criminal Code”.

The above individuals have committed no crimes. They were only exercising their rights to freedom of expression by peaceful means. Vietnam is a member of the UN Commission on Human Rights in which the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), Article 19, clearly protects the right of the individual to “seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print, or through any other media of his or her choice”. In addition, according to Article 9 of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, “No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile,” and The Socialist Republic of Vietnam’s Constitution itself declares the “right of freedom expression, right of freedom press, right of freedom exchange information and right to form an association and right to demonstration” in article 69. However, the Vietnam Communist Party has ignored these basic human rights, continued to crackdown and used harsh sentences to silence pro-democracy activists.

The People’s Democratic Party strongly condemns the trials and sentencing, staged by the Vietnamese Communist Party. We call upon our members and the Vietnamese people at home and abroad to continue fighting for Human Rights, Freedom and Democracy for Vietnam.

Ahmedabad, India, Oct. 10th, 2009: The online shopping site Infibeam.com has included the just launched Chetan Bhagat book ’2 States: The Story of My Marriage’ in its books store. Chetan Bhagat is the author of popular and accepted novels like One Night at the Call Centre, Five Point Someone, and Three Mistakes of My Life.

’2 States: The Story of My Marriage’ is Chetan Bhagat’s fourth Novel, which is about the generally awkward situation that people in love have to face from their families in India while opting for a love marriage. The novel is about how different cultural traditions become obstacles that need to be crossed before a love affair can culminate into a successful marriage.

“Chetan Bhagat is amongst India’s best-loved authors and we feel delighted to release his fourth novel on our website. Infibeam.com feels thrilled in promoting Chetan Bhagat books, as he is the one author who is loved for his simple language and flowing story line. For the benefit of our online shoppers, we are currently offering a 100% cash back offer, which means that they will get the book for free.” says Vishal Mehta, Founder & CEO of Infibeam.com.

Chetan Bhagat’s novel is about two fictitious characters Krish and Ananya who hail from Punjab and Tamil Nadu respectively, and are deeply in love with each other. Their plans to get married are initially met with stiff resistance from their parents and both face a tough time convincing their parents to get married eventually.

The author draws from his own experience about marriage as he is a Punjabi hailing from Delhi and his wife Anusha is a Tamilian. They both met at IIM Ahmedabad and fell in love. Given their different backgrounds, both had a tough time in convincing their parents before they could finally get married.

The book is a witty account on love marriages Indian style, while the book title brings to mind the discomfited situation that two individuals in love hailing from two different states face on their way to marriage. The varied cultural backgrounds get them into a situation where their families must come on common ground before their betrothal can be decided. ’2 States’ is about the hindrances and cultural shocks that inter community marriages can expose, all packed in an ideal style and humorous manner.

Infibeam.com is pompous to release this book with a 100% cash back offer with free shipping in India, which means that the book is free of cost to the buyer. Chetan Bhagat impresses every one with his originality and remarkable content that is hard to escape attention.

Contracts and new investment deals between UK and Chinese enterprises worth over US$500m were agreed during the visit to China this week by Lord Mandelson UK First Secretary of State and Secretary of State for Business, Innovation & Skills.

Many of these new business partnerships demonstrate UK capacity in low carbon business solutions, which will benefit British businesses while helping China meet its tough environment and energy efficiency targets.

Addressing a low carbon business solutions forum organised by UK Trade & Investment in Beijing on 8 September, Lord Mandelson said:

“Across the board, the UK can offer the knowledge, technology and experience to help our two economies de-carbonise. The UK has world-class climate change research institutions and consultancy services in carbon measurement and management. Our architects and engineers are creating designs for the low-carbon cities of the future”.

He later added:

“Pilkington, Greens Power, Zed Factory and The Carbon Trust are examples of outstanding UK companies working with advanced and low carbon technology. These new contracts not only demonstrate the strength of economic ties between the UK China, but also our shared commitment for developing a low carbon economy”.

As well as emphasising business to business collaboration, Lord Mandelson signed with the Mayor of Changsha, home to six million people in China’s Hunan province, a bilateral governmental agreement establishing Changsha as the third “Sustainable City”, alongside Wuhan and Chongqing. UK companies are well positioned to win business opportunities arising from the launch of the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan city cluster project by Hunan government with an initial investment of 70bn RMB (£5.5bn) on 134 key projects.

In Beijing Lord Mandelson also argued for greater access for UK goods and services suppliers to China’s rapidly developing domestic markets. He was delighted to receive confirmation from the Chinese government that regulators are in the final process of approving a new business combination of Bank of China, Standard Life and Tianjin Economic & Development Area.

In Shanghai Lord Mandelson also attended the groundbreaking ceremony for AstraZeneca’s new US$100m Innovation Centre China in Zhangjang Hi-Tech Park – one of three flagship R&D projects by major UK companies in Shanghai, along with GSK and Unilever.

£10m Joint Venture with China Energy Conservation Investment Corporation (CECIC) for the creation of a “Foreign Invested Venture Capital Enterprise” introducing low carbon technology companies from UK to China.

Pilkington Group Limited and Shanghai Yaohua Pilkington signed a Memorandum of Understanding regarding the installation of a second on line coating facility for the mass production of energy saving glass at a newly constructed float glass plant in Changshu, Jiangsu Province. Value estimated at Euro 35m. Each coating line will produce enough glass which when installed would save up to 120,000t of CO2 emissions per year.

Tesco

Signing of two mall projects in Nanjing and Qingdao. The Nanjing project is with Qinhua District government with gross floor area of 133,915 square metres and is due to open in Dec 2011.

Trade, Investment and Business Minister Lord Davies of Abersoch is urging London firms to take a fresh look at India, a market with a middle class that is 300 million strong and that produces half a million technology graduates every year.

“It’s been over a decade since outsourcing was the buzzword. Now, innovative Indian and UK firms are working together at the top end of the industrial spectrum – on pharmaceuticals, electronics and advanced manufacturing. India’s talent, confidence, energy and entrepreneurial spirit must be seen to be believed.”

Lord Davies will visit India from 14 to 17 September. Ahead of the G20 meeting in Pittsburgh, he will discuss trade with his ministerial counterparts, appointed after May elections that brought in a new government. He will visit Nagpur, the “zero-mile” city at India’s geographical heart, and Mumbai.

“The UK and India are natural partners of choice. In forums such as G20, we are standing shoulder to shoulder to promote global trade and economic liberalisation, which is vital to bring prosperity and jobs to hundreds of millions of people around the world,” he said.

Exports of goods to India from London rose in value by 50.3% from 2007 to 2008 to £1.83 billion.

The UK is the biggest European investor in India, which last year overtook Japan to become the biggest Asian investor in the UK by number of projects. Over 600 Indian firms are represented in the UK, of which about two thirds are in information technology or software. Last year alone, almost 4,000 new jobs were created in the UK by Indian investment.

The investment flows both ways. In Delhi, Lord Davies will visit the Ambience shopping mall, the largest in India, where Marks & Spencer, the Body Shop and Debenhams have been successfully established. He will also visit the Ballabgarh plant of JCB, the market leader in India, where every second construction vehicle is a JCB.

Lord Davies will go to Nagpur, one of nine Tier 2 cities offering exciting opportunities for UK firms. Design and engineering firm Scott Wilson is working on the giant MIHAN project that will transform the city into India’s logistical hub, creating 400,000 jobs.

“I am delighted to visit Nagpur, one of the engine rooms for India’s growth. UK firms should look beyond the obvious destinations of New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore and explore the potential of emerging cities such as Nagpur, with UKTI as their guide,” Lord Davies said.

With its network throughout the UK’s regions and 90 staff on the ground in India alone, UKTI (www.uktradeinvest.gov.uk) can offer advice to UK businesses that want to investigate this market. It can help UK firms to explore options and to find business partners, and can provide grants to help firms attend trade shows.

The minister will support a delegation of British businesses, led by the UK-India Business Council, visiting Nagpur. The delegation includes legal, financial and construction firms.

The Chair of the UK India Business Council, the Rt Hon. Patricia Hewitt, said:

“We are delighted to take our first Emerging Cities business delegation to India. The UK India Business Council has identified Nagpur as one of the nine fast-growing and most exciting emerging cities in India. It is particularly successful in key sectors – built environment, advanced engineering, education – where the UK is also strong.

“Some UKIBC member companies including Standard Chartered, JCB and Benoy have already established successful businesses in India’s emerging cities, helping them to deal with the economic downturn. Our message to British business is simple: building win-win partnerships in India now will help you emerge stronger from recession.”

Hammersmith-based Evolve Creative Ltd, a strategic design consultancy specialising in the FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) sector, commissioned an OMIS (Overseas Market Introduction Service) report from UKTI to uncover potential clients in India. It also joined a UKTI visit to the country. As a result of contacts made, Evolve now works on the brand portfolios of major Indian companies, and has a marketing office in Delhi.

Evolve’s Indian-born founder and CEO, Babu Datta, said of the market visit: abroad “Going to India before we started operating there was extremely valuable in understanding the market and the difference between how products are displayed and how the consumer buys, which are very different to the UK.

“UKTI helped me target contacts at the right decision-making level, which led to a valuable contract with expanding toiletries company Emami. We also now have contracts with Unitech, one of India’s biggest construction firms, and several other Indian companies.

“UKTI gave us a way into the Indian market and the opportunity to showcase our expertise. Indian businesses already see kudos in working with London-based brand design firms, but UKTI supplied the openings and the necessary direction in how to talk to core Indian companies.”

India fact file:

· The Indian middle class is 300 million strong. This represents a single English-speaking market comparable in size to the population of all of the UK’s EU trading partners combined.

· McKinsey Global Institute has forecast that India may become the fifth largest consumer market in the world by 2025.

· According to the Planning Commission of India, over US$500 billion of funding is needed for new power stations, airports, roads, railways, seaports, waterways and urban infrastructure over the next five years.

· Almost 40% of Indians are younger than 15.

· Less than 40% of Indian households have a bank account, and only 2% have insurance cover. Like the UK, India has a common law legal system.

· 10 million mobile phone handsets are sold in India every month.
