Woody Allen agreed (5/18/09) to accept a $5 million settlement from American Apparel. This is reported to be the largest amount ever paid under the New York Right to Privacy Statute.

Allen had sued American Apparel in March 2008 for using his image on their billboards, storefront banners, corporate headquarters, and internet website without permission. The settlement comes on the day a jury trial was set to begin in Manhattan. One week earlier, the Court had rejected American Apparel’s principal defenses.

Allen issued the following statement today: “American Apparel calculatingly took my name, my likeness, and image and used them publicly to promote their business. Threats and press leaks by American Apparel designed to smear me did not work and a scheme to call a long list of witnesses who had nothing to do with the case was disallowed by the court. I hope this very large settlement will discourage American Apparel and others from doing this type of thing to myself or others in the future.”

Mr. Allen was represented by Michael Zweig and Christian Carbone of Loeb & Loeb LLP, who stated, “We are pleased that through this action Mr. Allen was able to uphold the protections of New York’s Right to Privacy law and the federal law prohibiting deceptive advertising.”

“This grant will allow affected workers in Maine to access training and services that will aid them in obtaining re-employment in growing regional industries,” said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis.

Today’s grant will be awarded to the Maine Department of Labor and will be administered by the Eastern Maine Development Corp. All of the workers targeted for assistance under this grant also have been certified as eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA). Through this grant, workers will be able to access “wrap-around” services that are not available through the TAA program. These services may relate to career and skills assessments; case management; job search and follow up; resume and cover letter writing; and basic skills training. Training will focus on health care, business services and trade occupations, and will be provided through regional adult education programs and the Maine Community College.

True Textiles Inc., a leading producer of commercial interior fabrics, has been adversely impacted by foreign competition. On Oct. 21, 2008, True Textiles Inc. publicly announced previous and pending layoffs at the Guilford and Newport locations. Layoffs occurred from Sept. 15, 2008, through March 9, 2009.

This grant will be funded by resources made available for National Emergency Grants under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor’s discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state’s ability to meet specific guidelines.

An Australian inventor has designed and manufactured a revolutionary indoor/outdoor clothesline that is not only extremely space efficient, but by encouraging users to dry their clothes naturally, it also greatly reduces the need for electric dryers that add to greenhouse gas emissions.

The Invisible Clothesline, designed by Sydney-based inventor Wayne Leighton, is a compact, completely folding washing line that transforms into a simple, white wall-panel when not in use.

“At only 2.5cms thick when closed, yet delivering an impressive 15 metres of drying space, the Invisible Clothesline is chock full of clever design features,” Mr Leighton says.

Just some of these are the nested double rack assembly, the flexibility of using one rack only or both, and the neat way the cover sits comfortably out of the way in use, without needing to be stored separately. The clothesline also folds down against the wall, so the only thing visible is a flat panel that can be easily painted the same colour as the wall.

Made from powder-coated galvanised steel, the Invisible Clothesline is tough enough to go outside or inside.

“It’s a huge space saver, compared with bulky external clotheslines, and because it can be used internally, users can save significant power costs by not having to use energy-hungry dryers,” Mr Leighton says.“For each household, the Invisible Clothesline is also saving the environment from 1000 kg of nasty greenhouse emissions per year. And it is even better for your clothes as it reduces shrinkage and fading.”

Mr Leighton says the idea for the Invisible Clothesline came from not having a clothes drying option that was pleasing on the eye when not being used.

“I was fed up with looking at an ugly clothesline for the 95% of the time that it was idle. I wanted to free up the space occupied by traditional hoist type clotheslines, and provide a solution to the hassle of taking clothes airers out of storage, putting them up, using them, putting them down and then stowing them away again. Electric clothes dryers, shrink and damage clothes, are expensive to run, are a common cause of house fires, and are harmful to the environment. There had to be a better way; well now there is.”

Taking the idea from the backyard shed to become a practical solution for everyday use has been a long but worthwhile five-year journey. “There have been many challenges along the way, but we now have an easy and practical clothes drying solution, that will make a positive change to peoples lives, and help the environment.”

With patents awarded and pending in many countries worldwide, Mr Leighton is planning to expand sales of The Invisible Clothesline to include Europe, America and Asia.

A 100% Australian owned business, and 100% Australian designed and developed, the Invisible Clothesline is manufactured in China. “We really wanted to keep production in Australia, but the cost would have been too high for most consumers. Given that larger similar businesses have recently moved production to China, it was clear that this was the only viable option to produce a great product, of very good quality at an affordable price.”

There are just three easy steps to use the Invisible Clothesline – open the cover, lift the upper arm and extend the lower arm! Use the upper arm for minimal drying space, or both arms for the maximum drying space. No more dragging the clothes horse out!

Extensively patent protected, the Invisible Clothesline retails for $169.

“The Invisible Clothesline comes completely assembled for easy installation. It is guaranteed for two years and the dimensions when closed are 100cm wide, 70cm tall, 2.5cm deep,” Mr Leighton says.

“You just whack it up on your wall (timber or brick) and it’s ready to use. Brand new to the market, look out for it in Howards Storage World and Mitre10.”

Visit www.invcl.com for more information.
